How to present your work and evaluate a freelancer
A practical evidence-led portfolio guide: the problem, your role, deliverables, supporting evidence and limits.
Direct answer
A useful portfolio explains what you personally delivered, why the solution was chosen and what the example establishes. An attractive image alone does not prove campaign management or sales. Separate real assignments from learning exercises and publish only work you are entitled to show.
An evidence record for each project
- Context: business type, problem and constraints without exposing private client information.
- Your role: your contribution, collaborators and material AI assistance.
- Deliverable: a design, text, print file, campaign or page in a reviewable form.
- Reasoning: how the choices fit the audience, channel, format and budget.
- Evidence: the source, measurement period and method. Separate reach, clicks, enquiries and sales.
- Limits: what was not measured, what you did not control and any hypothetical element.
A clearly labelled learning example
Hypothetical exercise, not client work: an introductory post for a local bakery. The goal is to explain a product and ordering method. Deliverables are an image, short copy and a mobile layout. Evidence concerns readability, dimensions and accurate offer details; there are no sales figures because it was not a live campaign.
For a print exercise, include finished size, intended material, bleed and font checks against the printer’s requirements. For a campaign draft, disclose that it is unpublished; do not present another account’s numbers as its results.
Before publishing
- Obtain permission where your agreement does not grant portfolio rights.
- Remove private contact details, customer identifiers and confidential information from screenshots.
- Write image descriptions that explain the work rather than repeating filenames.
- List skills you can deliver now, supported languages, location and collaboration arrangements.
- Do not describe attendance as professional accreditation or imply an unsupported official partnership.
For business owners
Examine an example relevant to your task. Ask about the freelancer’s contribution, source files, revisions and timing. Start with a defined, reviewable scope and agree who approves content and owns the accounts. A public profile is self-reported information, not a guarantee of results.
